Chapter 18

Milo

As Milo turned the corner, he glanced in the rearview mirror. Gasps sounded from the backseat, which was exactly the reaction he’d hoped for.

“Dado, look at the lights! Can we stop?” Mia pressed her nose to the glass.

Sofie clapped. “Pretty lights.”

“That’s why we came—to see these beautiful lights.” He parked along the side of the street.

As he helped the girls out of their seats, he glanced around, wondering if Amy would show. He’d said more last night than he’d initially intended, but he had no regrets. If it was going to work, honesty was required, and she’d been more than honest when she was upset. Her admission combined with Art’s stunt had prompted Milo’s epiphany.

With Sofie on his hip and clutching Mia’s hand, Milo crossed the street, as much in awe of the lights as the first time he’d seen them. The girls’ squeals added to the experience.

He set Sofie down. “Stay close to me. Okay?”

The girls nodded, their heads tilted back. “We will.”

It wasn’t long before both girls were spinning in circles, staring up at the twinkling lights.

Dizzy, Sofie fell over. Milo squatted next to her, brushing grass off her coat. “Be careful, princess.”

He turned, and panic gripped him as he scanned the crowd around him. He couldn’t see Mia.

“Mia!” He clutched Sofie’s hand. “We need to find your sister.”

Scanning low for blinking tennis shoes, he wove his way through the crowd. “Mia!”

“Dado!” Mia’s voice eased some of his panic. “Look who I found!”

Amy waved. “Hi.”

“Punkin, you can’t run off like that.” He hugged Mia. “You scared me.”

Mia squirmed away and grabbed Amy’s hand. “Sorry, Dado. I saw my teacher. Can Miss Johnston look at lights with us?”

“Of course.” He stood and stepped closer to Amy. “You here alone?”

She nodded. “I love these lights, but my friends were busy.”

“We’d like it if you joined us.” He hoped the girls couldn’t read his expression and was glad that no other adults who knew them were around.

In her Christmas sweater, leggings, and knee-high boots, Amy looked perfect. “Thank you.” Her smiled widened when Sofie clutched Amy’s other hand.

“I’m Sofie. You came over when I was sick.”

“That’s right.”

“And you brought the purple popsicles. Those are my favorite.”

Amy smiled, distracting Milo from the light display. How was he going to be able to act like he wasn’t head over heels for her?

“Santa!” Sofie squealed and tugged Amy toward the man in red.

Milo walked behind as Amy led the girls to the line, Mia holding one hand, Sofie holding the other.

They would be thrilled to find out Amy was going to babysit.

When it was their turn to talk to Santa, Milo situated the girls on Santa’s lap, then stepped to the side with Amy as the elf snapped pictures. He yanked out his phone and captured the moment.

Mia glanced over at him, her eyes bright and her smile wide. A second later, she whispered in Santa’s ear. The man, whose beard showed his dedication to the role, shot a look in Amy’s direction and grinned.
